Wannacut, Sinlahekin, Pogue- LATE ARCHERY WITH SON?
«

I posted yesterday about taking my 13 year old son on his 1st archery hunt for Mulies. We were planning on the Swakane unit a bit but the more I am hearing the more I am thinking we may be better off starting somewhere else to make the trip a bit more enjoyable and a bit more feasible for my son. I was told these 3 GMUS (209-Wannacut, 215-Sinlahekin, 233-Pogue) are good units for late season archery. I am not very familiar with these areas; can anyone provide some insight on good places/ access and what we can expect out there? Looking to spot and stalk. Thanks for any tips you can give to a dad trying to get his son into some deer. This board has been awesome!

Expect pretty much the same as swakane... Busy, steep and cold

Wanncut has lots of private land, Sinlahekin really needs snow heavy enough to bring the deer down out of the high country, also it is steep, deep and cold as said previously. If you don't know the area deer can be hard to find. Don't know Pogue well enough to comment.

I've never hunted the swakane but I've heard its a zoo. I hunt two of the three you listed and I enjoy myself every year. Look for the places everyone else overlooks. A lot of people go to the same spots day in and day out. Last year my buddy and I switched it up and tried something different and we were able to glass up some dandy bucks. Killing one is another story. Our areas are pretty sacred. All I can say is head over a couple days early and check it out. Also if snow rolls in it can be a freakin blast. One year I had 4 legal bucks in a 100 yard area and one was a 178" masher my buddy shot. My only problem was deciding which one to shoot! Good luck in your research. Don't let the crowds scare ya.

I've been doing the late Wannacut for three years. It's like a spicy dish that is too hot to stand but still intriguing. I think that I'm done with it until I get a guide and find access to some private land. Many bucks come down for the rut regardless of the snow conditions, but what a crazy chaotic place to hunt if you're limited to public land! Guys chasing bloody wounded deer across roads, a few bucks walking around by the 3rd day with arrows stuck in their butts, 3 guys stalking the same animal; just a lot of mayhem. Oh and it's about 10 degrees at dawn and the water in my hydration pack freezes. I don't know why the bucks put up with it. If they were smart they'd stay in the orchards.

Hello i have hunted the swakane for many years, i grew up in wenatchee and i do go back there every late season. It is steep and yes you need chains. It can be a great place to hunt. I love it up there. Also there is the Manson Unit just North of Lake Chelan. The lower road goes way up into that countr and it can be good to. I have a couple spots that you can see deer. BUT you should try to drive over there before the season so you know your way around. Just like any season there are good people and there are turds. Mostly good. Check out Derby Canyon Road, Tibbits MT road. Go up eagle creek road out of Leavensworth. That road is the boarder so be careful know where you are at. Good Luck Maybe find a gated road and walk it, find an open high ridge and sit and look around. Have Fun thats what it is about Jstone
